Barbara Glackin, assistant university librarian for Resource Services and Technology and associate professor at the Branford P. Millar Library at Portland State University, has been named dean of Kent Library at Southeast Missouri State University.

Glackin will begin her new position July 18. She replaces Catherine Roeder, who has served in the interim since last summer when Dr. David Starrett, dean of Academic Information Services, left to become provost at Columbia College.

“I’m extremely excited Barbara Glackin accepted our invitation to become the next dean of Kent Library at Southeast Missouri State University and want to sincerely thank Catherine Roeder for her strong recent interim leadership in that position,” said Dr. Karl Kunkel, Southeast provost.

“Ms. Glackin’s background, experience, and career trajectory to this point all indicate she is an excellent fit to lead our library into the future as that important unit on our campus continues becoming the intellectual and resource hub of the University, supporting and strengthening our academic programs and the ultimate success of our student and faculty,” Kunkel said. “I very much look forward to beginning work with Ms. Glackin this summer as a member of the academic affairs leadership team.”

As the dean of Kent Library, Glackin will be responsible for providing the vision for the University’s library in its creation, preservation and delivery of information to students, faculty and the public in an ever evolving environment driven by technological change. The dean of Kent Library, who is closely aligned with the pedagogical, scholarly and creative activities at Southeast, will report to Kunkel and supervise a team of faculty and staff professionals.

Glackin has dedicated herself to nearly 30 years in library services. She has been at Portland State University the past three years managing acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, electronic and continuing resources, and library technologies. There, she has served as a member of the Library Administrative Leadership Team, served on the Library Council and provided support for the Orbis Cascade Alliance’s Alma/Primo shared integrated library system.

She also has served on the Website Advisory Committee, has served as the Biology Department library liaison, on the university’s Faculty Senate Library Committee and as a member of the library budget team; and chaired the Collection Planning Group.

Prior to her tenure at Portland State, Glackin was associate dean of public services, head of cataloging and online catalog, and associate professor at Albertsons Library at Boise State University; assistant professor and cataloging/technical services librarian at Leonard H. Axe Library at Pittsburg (Kansas) State University; and technical services librarian in Library Services at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, Iowa.

Glackin is a member of the American Library Association. She has a number of scholarly publications and presentations to her credit, has organized several workshops and participated in numerous conferences in recent years. She holds a Master of Library Information Science from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Arts from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa.
